The plot of a story is the action.  The plot revolves around a conflict or problem.  There are five main types of conflicts:
  • Person vs. person (problem with another character)
  • Person vs. society (problem with the laws or beliefs of a group)
  • Person vs. nature (problem with force of nature such as a blizzard)
  • Person vs. self (problem with deciding what to do or think)
  • Person vs. fate (problem that seems to be uncontrollable)
That struggle builds until it reaches a crisis or a turning point.  That moment is the climax.
  1. Describe one conflict in the novel.
  2. How would you have reacted if you were facing that same conflict?
  3. Respond to a classmate's comment about the conflict.
Example: I think that the main conflict in The Summer of the Swans is that Charlie wanders off and Sara has to go find him.  This is a a person vs. person conflict because she is having a problem with another person.  I also think it might be a person vs. self because she had to decide what to do about it.  I think I would have done the same thing.  I would have felt too guilty if something had happened to him and I didn't do anything about it.

  1. One conflict in the novel A Green Glass Sea is that Dewey and Suze are what i would consider the smart lonely girl vs. the also smart but not as much showoff girl and there is obviously a conflict. The main conflict in the story is what the story is based on which is world war two and the conflict is the Allies (U.S. and British) vs. the Nazis who are assisted by the Japanese

  2. I think the main ocnflict in the Green Glass Sea as of now is that Dewey has to stay with Suze until her dad gets back. This is a person vs. person conflict because Suze does not like Dewey one bit. She even has a rude nickname for her, " Screwy Dewey." Now if a girl i barely new were to stay at my house i would try my best to make her feel at home. But my feeling about Dewey is different then how Suze feels. I find Dewey smart and nice.
I also think Suze has one bit of imformation about what Dewey has been through as well.

  3. A conflict in The Green Glass Sea is that Deweys papa died because. There were soldiers drunk driving, celebrating and hit him. This is a person vs. fate because no one knows as of now what will happen to Dewey. No one knows were she will go. The Green Glass Sea group hopes Dewey stays with the Gordons. by period 1 green glass sea

  4. I'm sorry to break it to ya but unfortunatley Mr. Kerrigan never comes back and Dewey bocomes a good friend of suze so the conflict would change to person vs society cuz they bond together and ignore the girl scouts which means Joyce and her posse. Then because she bonds with suze it has another conflict which is person vs person because they both don't like Joyce

P.S. Mr. Kerrigan gets hit by a car

  5. I think that the biggest conflict in the story is that Dewey's dad died wail he was away and now Dewey has to say with the Gorden's probably till the war is over. Also when the war is over Dewey has no more family to call. how will this be solved read more to find out till next time this is JESSICA W. signing out! peace!

  6. Be careful. I am worried that this book club is confusing plot events with conflict. I think you need to look at the big picture. What is the main problem being dealt with through the majority of the story? 1) One could definitely be person vs. person with Dewey and Suze. This conflict actually continues over into the sequel. 2) The other coflict is probably considered person vs fate. These scientists and their families are on the hill because of circumstances beyond their control. Now they have to deal with that throughout the book. Choose one of these two conflicts and watch for it to be resolved in a specific chapter. Go back and evaluate the comments posted here by classmates. Which comment sees the big picture? After giving it more thought, who has described an accurate conflict? Can you now revise your thinking and more accurately describe the conflict?

  7. I think the main conflict is the war w/ Germany and Japan, but there are also many more conflicts through the story, like the conflict between Suze and Dewey and the conflict with Dewey's Dad (if you haven't read that far yet you'll find out) -Matthew H.

  8. I think the conflict is person vs. person in the beggining with dewey and suze but later it is person vs. self because dewey is sad because her dad died. and it looks like some of you are posting person vs. conflict

  9. I think a conflict is person vs. fate.
Dewey has no family to go to, and has not a thought of what will happen to her since her papa has passed. I hope she stays with Suze. But who knows with the gadget and every thing going on with the war it has been so hecktic.

  10. I think that the conflict at the part Im at is how Dewy has to deal with the loss of her father, in that case it would be a person vs. fate, Dewy seems to be in a depression time...

  14. i think that the book is person vs all of them cause deweys dad died, she doesn't know where to go, world war 2, can't talk about where they are to relitivs, how will the war go, and so on but i mostley think that it's person vs self because dewey dose not know what to do.

  15. I would say a conflict is the fact that dewey has to live without her dad and the falling action would be that deweys dad just died. :)

  16. I think the main conflict is between Dewey and Suze. The reason I think this is because Dewey and Suze live together for most of the story and Suze at first was mean to Dewey
